| See a jeweler for professional cleaning. If you
cannot, before you clean BE SURE YOUR OPAL IS NOT A
DOUBLET or a TRIPLET (pieces of opal on a background or sandwiched
between two layers) or your piece will be ruined as moisture will
separate the layers. If at all possible, try to clean the jewelry
with a soft polishing cloth and rinse in cool (not cold) water.
If piece is extremely dirty, use the same cleaning method as outlined
for Gemstone
Jewelry in Gold and Platinum. HOWEVER, use cool water instead
of lukewarm water. Also, instead of soaking for 10 to 20 minutes,
soak briefly for no more than 5 minutes. Dry with a soft, absorbent
cloth. Air dry on a towel to ensure complete dryness. |
Do not use hot water, a steamer or an ultrasonic
cleaner.
Do not expose to extreme heat. Opal is extremely fragile, avoid
shocks and abrupt changes in temperature. Avoid scratching stone
with polishing cloths if cleaning mounted stones. |
