Katee was an actress, sculptor and songwriter. Steve, her husband, was a master carpenter, singer and songwriter. Beth, Katee's sister, was an artist with plenty to express but no outlet for her creativity. One day, the trio was sitting around twiddling their thumbs and one of them (no one can remember who) said, "What time is it?"

Steve said he never wore a watch. Katee said she couldn't see the clock in the next room from where she was sitting. Beth got up and went in to check the alarm in the bedroom. This is ridiculous, they thought. Why isn't there a clock in each room?

Thus was the beginning of their new company, Maverick Creations, named for the renegade, freewheeling, unconventional spirits of Steve, Katee, and Beth. In barely twelve months, Steve, Katee and Beth designed over 100 surprisingly affordable art clocks and put them out for sale on the internet, with Katee taking responsibility for designing and maintaining their web site. Steve's superior woodcarving, construction and design skills are the perfect partner for Beth's design and decorating - which includes colors even Rembrandt wasn't creative enough to dream up.

Among the more grand Maverick wonders are the Grandfather clock, a whopping six and a half feet tall, with a case of rustic rough cedar and a solid oak face, hand detailed by Steve, with a solid brass pendulum with intricate hand painting by Beth. For funky fun there's the 1960s Retro clock (Katee's favorite) - a blast from the past for many Baby Boomers. Beth is fondest of the Whimsical Collection, which includes faux cuckoo clocks like the Star House, the Autumn House and the Heart House. "They look," Beth says," like the dream houses of my childhood." Steve, who never faced a piece of wood he didn't want to carve, admits his greatest love is the Modern Geometric clock - the beauty of natural wood combined with the no-nonsense sensibility of classic geometric shapes.

The combination of Katee, Steve and Beth's strengths and creativity go together to create clocks with colors as potent as their sunsets. Or their sunrises. Maverick Creations clocks are all handmade and hand painted, so there will be subtle differences from clock to clock. "In effect," the trio stresses, " Maverick Creations never does the same clock twice." But as well as producing each clock as a unique piece of art, all Maverick clocks feature American-made quartz movements and the kind of integrity and workmanship that belong to a bygone era.

Says Katee, "If nothing else, we're the only people in the whole world who will always have time for you!"
